First Chicks!
Our take
Hello, chicken enthusiasts! I’m thrilled to share that I’ve officially joined the flock-raising crew! Last Friday, I welcomed my first feathered friends from BigR, and I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and a dash of anxiety—fingers crossed none are roosters! My little ladies include two Orpingtons (one black and one lavender, I think), two Blue Australorps, two Cream Legbars, and two Black Majesty Marans. I opted for a colorful variety to discover which breed tickles my fancy before fully committing. It’s only been five days, and I’m already in awe as they sprout their wing feathers! Check out some adorable pics from their first day home, a couple of days in, and today. Let's cluck and celebrate this egg-citing adventure together!

| Hi everyone, I recently decided to get into raising chickens and picked up my first girls from BigR last Friday! (Crossing fingers none turn out to be roos haha.) I haven't named them yet but I have two orpingtons (I think one black and one lavender), two blue australorps, two cream legbars, and two black majesty marans. I decided to go with a variety for my first flock to see what kinds of chickens I like best before selling my soul to a specific breed. _^ It's only been five days and I can't believe they're already getting their wing feathers! Here's some pics of their first day home, a couple of days ago, and today! [link] [comments] |

- New girls first day out the coop!To celebrate my 13 years of keeping chickens I got 4 new girls, they’ve been shut in for the past week just so they get used to their new home and now they are free to roam! They are named after mountains Light brahma: Zuggi short for Zugspitze Partridge: Laya (Himalaya) White cochin: Elby (Elbrus) And then Easter the buff brahma! Since we got her on Easter 2 weeks ago :) + a random closeup of my roosters feathers Enjoy :) submitted by /u/StribrneNebe [link] [comments]
- Pullet or cockerelI'm a first time chicken owner with a flock of 20. The two pictured are a Rhode Island red (brown with spots) and the midnight majesty maran (pigeon looking one). They are the only two I think might be males based on picture 2's wattle coming in and picture one because if the redness and size of its comb compared to it's 4 sisters. In total I have 5 Rhode Islands, 5 marans and 10 leg horns. Other than those differences they are identical. The red is also the first to approach me overtime I enter, then all the others come over after she/he has done their scout. All checks are 55 days old (almost 8 weeks). - First chicks!Hello chicken veterans! (Photo taken right before bedding change, also their first time trying cucumber scraps! They loved them🫶) I raised chicks as a kid with my family, but stopped after the flock was brutalized by a family of raccoons (R.I.P. Red, you were my favorite). Now, I'm raising my own chicks! I got 6 to start: 4 Plymouth Rock and 2 Orpington. I bought them at my local Tractor Supply, and currently have these lovely ladies in a 4x4 indoor enclosure with a heat lamp mounted 3' up in their own room! When I bought them 4 weeks ago, I noticed some had wing feathers and tail feathers sooner than others. Now that they're nearly completely feathered, it's hard to tell how old they are especially since I couldn't possibly tell you when they were hatched. That being said, I'm not sure how to judge the temperature they'd be most comfortable at until their new coop is built. We had a cold front and with them being in a rather drafty room, I set up a small oscillating heater... but now I'm rethinking based on some of the temperatures you guys are putting the chickens out at. I'm hoping a more experienced chicken person can tell me how old you think these girls are and some guidance on indoor brooding > outdoor coop and run transition–especially for predators and safety. Do you allow them to free roam, and if so, how much area do they roam? Thanks in advance!! submitted by /u/unconscious-living [link] [comments]
- Please show me your OrpingtonsHello everyone, my Hen Rosi started today her brooding of my first Orpingtoneggs (she's a Brahma). I wanted Bantam Cochins but my Housemate (and the owner of the farm I live at) said I am only allowed to brood if she could eat the Roo's and is full afterwards. So I searched for eggs from Big Cochins and found Orpingtoneggs nearby. I am so curious how they will turn out.
