Help! I only have one chicken left!
Our take
I'm down to one sole survivor from my flock of 4. What do i do? She's traumatized and has been curled up in the nesting box for the last two days, only coming out if i physically make her. I put a mirror in the coop and have been trying to spend time nearby don't yardwork and talking.
i need to decide if:
a) I should run out and buy a couple chicks to put under her. She's been broody, but idk if she's too freaked out now to take care of herself or babies.
b) give her away to someone with other chickens
c) try to get some pullets, hoping that is less work than introducing full grown chickens
I want to do whatever is likely the least amount of work for me, I've got a baby and a toddler and not a lot of energy to take care of much else this spring.

- Small flock of chickens hate ONE new chickenHi there, I had a neighbor ask me to adopt their solo chicken after it's partner died, which I was happy to do, but it's been extremely rough trying to integrate her with my current small flock because they hate her. Every time they are together in the yard they pin her down and peck at the back of her neck. Here is the timeline of everything I tried: One month garage quarantine Two months of "through the fence" visual introduction with no physical encounters. During this time she frequently puffed up at one of my other chickens. Six Months living in a separate enclosure that is visible from the other (her own food, water, roost, next etc). Free range in the yard every weekend, where the flock beats on her relentlessly if they see her and she has to constantly run away. I'm hoping that these contact days would improve but they are not (maybe very slightly) I'm not sure what else to try. I'd like everyone in the same run and coop during the day and to stop fighting. I have about 100 sqft per chicken in my run and a coop large enough for everyone. submitted by /u/Brad-Moon-Rising [link] [comments]
- Struggling Baby ChickI'm posting out of serious concern for a recently hatched baby chicken. I'm really worried and sad that the chick may not make it, so I ask for kindness in responses please. My hens have been tending to the eggs. This is my first time having hens to do the brooding and incubation. So far 4 have successfully hatched. This baby chick took over a day to hatch (so officially born fully yesterday evening). I checked up on it this evening and I see that one of its wings and side appear to be damaged (looks like a wound). The damaged wing looks like it may just be a nub? Additionally, on that same side of the chick its leg looks limp (apologies I'm having a hard time describing and it's difficult to take a photo with 2 hens brooding). The baby chick's eyes look like they're now closed, it's still chirping. Any recommendations/ideas/well wishes/thoughts and prayers? Tomorrow morning when the avian vet opens I'm going to call to see if I can bring it in. submitted by /u/ChibiBarbie [link] [comments]
- A broody girl and introducing chicks question (she's the loner of the crew)We've got a Barred Rock thats been broody at least a month. Theres no chance the eggs are fertile as our Rooster died around that time. She's always been a loner. Im afraid the other girls might peck or attack the chicks. Is this a reasonable concern? The chicks are also a week old so Im already taking a chance but I really need to get her off the nest for health reasons. submitted by /u/1stHalfTexasfan [link] [comments]
- Help baby chicke nI volunteer at a place that has baby chicks, and the main bird volunteer is out of town and one of the babies is not doing well. This morning I found it on the bottom of the container with all the other baby chicks and it looked like it was dead, but it was moving a little so I gave it some egg yolk and Pedialyte mixed in a dropper and held it near the heater (not too close!) alternating betweeen heating it and heating it, for about 90 minutes. It had a lump on its chest, which I just learned is a crop. I had to leave for a while but is there anything I can try to purchase? I usually foster puppies and have lots of experience with sick puppies but none with birds. Please be kind - I am not knowledgeable but willing to read or learn to help until tomorrow when bird person comes back. submitted by /u/EmphasisFew [link] [comments]
