Hen in severe respiratory distress. What can I do right now?
Our take
Oh no, it sounds like your feathered friend is in quite the pickle! When a hen is in severe respiratory distress, it can be a cluck-tastrophe for both her and you. Her deep, labored breaths and wheezing are certainly cause for concern, especially with that full, doughy crop and yellowish discharge. You’ve already taken some great steps by isolating her, trying steam therapy, and keeping her calm—gold stars for that! It's essential to monitor her closely while you consider other interventions. Make sure she remains upright, as this can help ease her breathing. If her condition doesn’t improve or worsens, it may be time to consult a vet who specializes in poultry. Remember, you’re not alone in this; your community is here to support you!

| My hen suddenly started having trouble breathing today. She is taking deep labored breaths every time, wheezing, and stretching her neck to breathe. She is not constantly open mouth gasping, but it’s every breath. I also noticed her crop is very full and doughy, and she passed some yellowish discharge from her butt. So far I have: I tried to tilt her slightly to empty the crop but stopped because she was struggling to breathe. No eye swelling or discharge. [link] [comments] |

- Sick henI have a hen I just got the night before last that is not moving as much as the others, and her breathing is somewhat labored. Her butt is flexing as she breathes. I assumed she was egg bound, so she’s in a warm epsom salt bath currently, but then noticed her breathing is a little…raspy? I’m worried it may be something respiratory. She’ll be quarantined from the rest of the flock. What else can I do? submitted by /u/Rachelruthless7 [link] [comments]
- Please help!!My favorite hen peachy isn't feeling good. Her tail is bobbing and she's a bit lethargic. I examined her a bit and her crop is small and hard, she also started struggling to breath when I picked her up and tried to get away (this is the most cuddly chicken I've ever had she ADORES being held) I put her in the garage with water and the Internet told me not to give her solid food for 12-24 hours so I crushed up a boiled egg (without the shell) and gave that to her. I saw someone say online to feed a chicken with a bad crop some olive oil and massage the crop so I might try that tomorrow. I'm very worried about her she's one of my best friends honestly, she was the first chicken to ever run to me for cuddles instead of me having to chase or pick them up lol. submitted by /u/AdEnvironmental4177 [link] [comments]

- Sick hen please helpThis is my hen Tidbit we’re very connected to her we’ve had her for almost 2 years now and she’s my last hen who was connected to my forever rooster DR. P who sadly disappeared in December. Dr. P was more of a pet to me than anything else and we had a very very very special bond… Tidbit had kind of stepped up and takes care of the flock since he passed… out of nowhere this morning, tidbit seemed extremely off, walking around slowly , but not going very far and moving pretty slow… she also let me handle her very easy. wet stool all over her vent .. one of her eyes is pretty squinty and not much interest in food or water. I have her resting in a milk crate and I’ve been sitting with her for hours. I’ve been using a water dropper to get some fluids in her, but I’m very very concerned because I haven’t seen much improvement over the course of the day. Does anyone have any advice or experience with something like this???? submitted by /u/AsvpRocky24 [link] [comments]
