Lump on Leg

Our take

Have you ever spotted a lump on your chicken’s hock joint and felt a mix of confusion and concern? Meet the one-year-old Easter Egger who's not only an egg-laying enigma (with just three eggs to her name) but also now has a mysterious lump that’s left her caregiver puzzled. After noticing the bump last Wednesday and observing no change in behavior, the owner attempted to aspirate the lump, only to find it solid and somewhat vascular. Despite keeping her comfortable and clean with antibiotic cream, the chicken has started limping significantly. With no local vets willing to help and a long drive to the nearest one, this chicken enthusiast is reaching out for insights and support from fellow chicken lovers.

Has anyone seen a lump on the hock joint like this? This is my one year old “Easter egger”, who is a bit of an anomaly herself. She has only ever laid 3 eggs but sits in the nest box every day. I noticed this lump last Wednesday, I have been checking on it everyday with no change and she has been acting normal. Sunday night I decided to aspirate it with a 18g needle to see if anything was inside. Nothing came out, except it bled. It appears to be solid and somewhat vascular. I held off on cutting into it because she was acting normal. I cleaned it up, put on antibiotic cream and wrapped it lightly to keep it clean. I came home from work today to find her limping pretty bad on that leg. I have separated her into my little hospital but I’m at a loss. I can’t find anything on the internet that looks like this. I have no fear of cutting it open if it’s just infection that needs cleaned out, like a bumble. I’ve done those surgeries a lot but I worry it’s a cancer tumor and I may not be able to stop the bleeding. These pics are from Sunday night.

I’ll just say, no vets in my area will see chickens. I have called all of them, a few times. There is one that will see chickens that is over a two hour drive one way and getting an appointment is a long shot.
