Mysterious meaty blob appears by my chicken: fowl play or just egg-citing
Ummm any clue what this is?

There is no way that mysterious meat blob appeared beside your laying hen through anything less than fowl play, and we are here to say it: your chickens are messing with you. This is not the first time our feathery friends have kept us guessing with bizarre leftovers, and it certainly won't be the last. We recently covered how Feathered friends go wild for leftover brisket fat: but is it safe when a backyard chef found his flock going absolutely bonkers for beef tallow, and that story proves chickens have a sixth sense for meaty treasures. Your blob looks eerily similar to a chunk of fat that got stashed away for later, a little egg-citing emergency ration your hen forgot she had.

Now, before you start thinking a predator snuck in and met a grisly end, let's get practical. You said all ten birds are perfectly healthy, no dead animals in the pen, and the hen house sits several feet off the ground up a ramp. That rules out most of the usual suspects. But here is the thing about chickens: they are tiny dinosaurs with a talent for hiding snacks. That blob is almost certainly a piece of the beef fat trimmings you fed them, but one that got carried off and tucked into a cozy corner for a rainy day. Chickens are notorious for playing keep-away with treats, especially when they want to savor them in peace. Your hen was probably mid-lay when she remembered her secret stash, dropped it beside herself, and then looked at you like *you* were the crazy one.

Compare this to the troubling case of Our rooster stopped crowing and now he's stumbling: anyone seen this fowl play before? where a sick bird had everyone worried sick. Your situation is the opposite, no illness, no injury, just a very confusing meat lump. That is actually great news. It means your flock is healthy enough to be mischievous. The biggest takeaway here is simple: check your coop for hidden stashes before you assume something sinister is happening. Chickens are hoarders. They will wedge fat, bugs, and even the occasional egg into nooks you never knew existed. If you find more mystery meat, you can relax, it's just your girls being their quirky, cluck-tastic selves.

What does this mean for you tomorrow? Keep an eye on that hen who was laying next to the blob. If she starts acting secretive or scratches at a specific corner of the coop, you have found her personal pantry. And if you want to avoid future heart-stopping discoveries, maybe ration those fat trimmings into smaller, eat-right-now portions. Otherwise, prepare for more meaty surprises that make you question whether you are running a chicken coop or a fowl-themed crime scene.

Found this meaty thing just beside one of my chickens who was laying (pictured slightly) and have no clue what it is. All 10 chickens seem in perfectly good health, the last meat we fed them was fat trimmings (much much smaller than this) from beef. As far as I know no animal has gotten in and died within the pen and whilst some eggs have been found broken cause the chickens lay them from a height or step on them, they all have been yolky and we have no rooster. Anyone have any clue what this might be and…
