Oh, the feathered drama continues! Our dear Roo has been a bit too aggressive lately, leaving me with two puncture wounds and a bruised shin that’s really making a statement. After getting a tetanus booster and starting antibiotics, I’m keeping a close eye on those pesky wounds. Pharaoh the Roo’s fate is still up in the air, but I’ll keep you posted! It seems my flared pants didn’t sit well with him, and he even chased my 7-year-old during playtime. Yikes! I always try to win him over with treats, but clearly, he’s a tough nut to crack.
| | UPDATE: I got a tetanus booster this morning and started a round of antibiotics. I am closely monitoring the puncture wounds. The fate of Pharaoh the Roo has yet to be determined but I will post an update if anything changes Thank you everyone for all the great advice and your concern. I appreciate it! Increasingly aggressive Roo. I know the two puncture wounds don’t look like much but my entire shin is bruising up quite nicely. My partner thinks I need to go get shots or antibiotics lol My cat is clearly concerned too lol He has only attacked my partner before. Well, one time I had winter boots on that had some faux fur on them, and he did attack them because obviously. This time it seems he just didn’t like my flared flappy pants. He chased my 7yo yesterday because she happened to run by the ladies while playing in the yard. I was able to divert his aggression towards me and crisis averted. I always offer him treats first but the ladies are usually on it first. He’s our first ever Roo so I wasn’t really prepared for this increased aggression. Is there anything I can do to make him less defensive and more comfortable with us? I fear my partner won’t tolerate him much longer [link] [comments] |

A tetanus shot and some antibiotic and I know I’m in the clear for any major infections. As you can see, Pharaoh has not become soup. He has been given a second chance. This is me holding him an hour ago. He was triggered by my clothing and is really good with the girls. - Rooster Jail Sentence? Life?WARNING! RAMBLING AND DIRTY WORDS AHEAD: This gorgeous little fucker has started being way too aggressive with my hens. Before I chop his big stupid head off (which I almost did the other day)- I'm giving him one last try to help him get his shit together, because despite how tough I try to be, I absolutely adore him. He's really young, and has been a decent dude so far. (Side Note: Thankfully I am off this week, so I am able to work with him pretty intentionally.) Some background from the past month. My older hen got sick early March and I isolated her for days. I thought she was well enough to have a few hours in the sun, but I was wrong. My new hens attacked her, and I had to keep her indoors for days before her inevitable demise (she held on strong for 19 days 😔🥹😢). It was heartbreaking. Rest in peace, Noodle. Lesson learned. N-E-Wayz: I thought that was a one off situation, because she was ill, and pecking order etc- but since then the new flock and new rooster- have been more aggressive with my last two older hens (we call them the OCs "original chickens"). My older hens are not that old, a little over 2, and in great health. My husband and I have been keeping an extra eye on them, and separating them a bit, etc. We've let the OCs get special treatment, longer free range hours and treats etc. They have been able to co- exist with supervision. Well, Monday I looked out the window and my rooster (9ish months old) was sparring one of the OCs and I ran to intervene. I caught him (I have no idea how, he is sooo fast) and threw him in a pen. He has been isolated from all hens since Monday. My sweet girl, John Cena (the irony), had feathers ripped out, thankfully no blood. Overall, I caught it early enough that her injuries were minimal. Alas, since his incarceration for being a turd burglar: all hens new and old seem to be getting along completely fine now without him- and I'm realizing maybe he is potentially the full aggressor/instigator. After all of that rambling - - How long should I keep him separated? - How do I reintroduce him? (supervised obviously) - Is there anything else I could do as a last ditch effort? - Am I wasting my time? - Do you want the rooster meat, I'm vegetarian 😔? (more info:) - 6 hens/ 1 rooster (was 7 hens) - mixed breed larger hens, all young & egg laying - huge free-range space and woods - huge enclosed run - enclosed coop Thank you all! - We have a racist roo...suggestions?Anyone have a better solution for our racist roo? Well, breed, not race, but still. He's a creme legbar. He loves his olive egger hen, which frankly looks like a creme legbar with more brown in her feathers. He loves their two offspring, which look almost exactly like creme legbars. He tolerates the cuckoo maran. The generic brown chicken, the welsummer, the black copper maran, he doesn't like. He flat-out bullies and chases Penny, the brown hen. If everyone is munching on egg shells, he'll peck at and intimidate away the three hens. If I give them a treat, I have to shoosh him and the other hens away from the three bullied ones so that the three of them can also get a treat. The cuckoo maran is mostly blind and I think he gave up trying to intimidate her, she can't see him! My husband caught him guarding the feeder against the three hens, so "his" three could eat! Husband chased the roo off and wouldn't let him near the three hens he targets, and then RooRoo went after my husband. First and only time he'll go after a person, and he's fine with my kid and me, overall a sweet calm bird. He's also got a quiet-ish crow and we really don't want to get rid of him BUT we can't have him bullying half the flock either. No other roo ever did this. I'm planning to separate "his" three hens into the garage or under the trampoline for a few days, and leave him with the three he doesn't like and the oblivious one. Hopefully he'll start guarding and being a good roo with them. I doubt it. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? He hasn't hurt any of them, but he won't let them eat until "his" girls are done and gone, and he chases them off treats, and that's not going to fly.
