Such a thing as a coop being TOO big?

| | Hello! I FINALLY have chickens!!!! Babies! And they graduate out of the house at the end of the month. Right now I’m deep in the coop planning stages and have a question with some context. My question: is a 6x8’ coop too big for six chickens? Context: I live in a COLD climate (MN), they will NOT be free range but will have a large run and all the toys they could wish for out there, I live in an urban environment (Minneapolis) so they are definitely backyard chickens. My ultimate concern: bullying, boredom, pecking order, cabin fever, not enough space to spread out when they dont want to go outside, etc. But am I going overboard? I see other people’s coops for EIGHT chickens and they seem to be much smaller than what I’m thinking of going with. I want my ladies to be happy campers. (This is the coop I’m looking to have built and delivered next week with a big long walk-in L shaped run) Also the name of my flock? The Lesbihens. [link] [comments] |

- Will a flock of 6 utilize 2 coops?We’re almost at the 6 week mark with our new flock. We fell into the TSC trap of “4 to 6 hens” with this model of coop, but I got two of them because I could tell one wasn’t big enough, especially since we got a couple of bigger breeds. Two of each - buff Orpington, Brahma, and Americana. The enclosed run in 20 by 10, completely surrounded by hardware cloth and an apron, and they will free range on our 6 acre property a few days/hours per week. But now I’m wondering, will the flock use both coops or are they all going to want to squeeze into the same one? - Starting out help!Our house came with a chicken coup and we haven't done anything with it for the 6 years living here. Shame on us, I know! We're finally going to get it cleaned up and ready for our own. It's a homemade plywood coup and needs a little work before we can get chickens in it. What advice do you all have? -how many chickens for this size? It's maybe about 6ftx6ft? I'd like some for laying and a few for butchering if I can - it has a cutout on the one side for the chickens to go out of the coup and a space with 4x4s set up to put fencing around -what supplies do you recommend? (plastic vs metal feeding/watering?) -is there enough air flow? ideas how to fix? -open to any suggestions that are as budget friendly as possible! - When the coops not good enoughI spent weeks building them a 4x6 coop with 18 linear feet of roost space. I even got windows! Well we put 7 new babies out today so I was out in the run at night, I opened the coop to only see one of our 14 week old chickens.
