Who Left the Coop Door Open on That Breed Box?
pullet ID!!

Let's be honest: if your husband throws away the breed box from your new pullet order, you have every right to stage a small, dramatic poultry intervention. We've all been there, standing in the run, staring at a flock of identical fluffy dorks, wondering which one is supposed to lay olive eggs and which one is just here to judge you. This is the kind of fowl play that tests a marriage and a chicken keeper's patience in equal measure.

The original poster, /u/Dizzy_Vacation3280, is now left with a feathered mystery squad. They know one bird is an Easter Egger, one is a "seafoam green egger" (which, bless their heart, is not an actual breed, just a color description), and the rest are complete unknowns. This is the chicken equivalent of finding a dozen eggs in your fridge with no carton labels. You know they're eggs, but you have no idea who laid what or when. And here's the thing: we've all been there, clutching a blurry photo and begging strangers on the internet to play breed detective.

So what do we actually tell someone in this situation? First, breathe. Then make peace with the fact that you might never know the exact lineage of every pullet, and that's okay. Chickens don't care about their paperwork. What matters is that you can still tell them apart once they grow up. Look at comb styles, feather patterns, leg color, and body shape. That Easter Egger will probably have a beard or muffs and a slate-blue leg. The seafoam green egger, if you bought it from a hatchery that sells "colored egg layers", is almost certainly another hybrid or an Olive Egger cross. The rest will reveal their secrets when they start laying, because egg color is the ultimate ID card.

Lose the breed box once, and you learn a hard lesson about labeling. Keep a notebook, take photos with names scrawled on a whiteboard, or at minimum hide the box before your spouse can "organize" it. But don't lose the fun. The mystery is part of the chaos. The next time your hubs asks what breed that grey one is, just smile and say, "She's a Rare Kitchen Counter Surprise." Then hand him a treat and walk away.
