Croatia: Spontaneous detour to Plitvice was the highlight of our trip

so we were in croatia for a week in september 2025 and had this whole itinerary planned out. started in Dubrovnik for 2 days which was gorgeous but crazy touristy, then did Hvar and some of the adjacent islands for 4 days. honestly Hvar was amazing, the island waters were perfect since it wasn't peak summer anymore.

anyway we were supposed to drive straight from Split (mainland near Hvar) to Zagreb for our flight home but literally decided last minute to detour through Plitvice National Park instead. like we were packing up our airbnb and my friend just goes "wait what if we just drive through plitvice" and we were like lets go for it.

best travel decision we made tbh. yeah it's crowded and touristy but honestly the views are insane. those natural lakes and waterfalls everywhere, super instagram worthy if that's your thing. september was perfect timing too cause the summer crowds were mostly gone but the weather was still warm enough to enjoy it.

the real magic happened when we wandered off the main boardwalks a bit though. found this grassy area that felt like proper countryside and just laid down for a while. these ducks were just casually walking around us while we stared at the sky and it hit me that this was one of those perfect travel moments you can't really plan for.

we almost skipped it cause we thought we didn't have time and were worried about making our flight. glad we didn't listen to our original itinerary. sometimes the best stuff happens when you just go with it and see what happens.
