China Cybersecurity

Hi everyone! I'm planning a trip to China with family and have been trying my best to research the do's/don'ts of traveling to the country. In searching, I've landed on a few important questions I was hoping people smarter than me might be able to help me figure out. The most pertinent to me is the issue of cybersecurity.

I've seen many people, mostly cybersecurity types but also members of this sub, strongly urging people not to bring their personal devices to China. I've seen anecdotal tales of compromised bank accounts, emails, dummy USBs, etc and there does seem to be some degree of risk associated with bringing devices into the country. I guess part of what I am trying to understand is how to mitigate this risk and whether it is worthwhile. Am I, as an otherwise unremarkable tourist who plans on respecting the laws/customs of the country, at risk of something like a compromised bank account if I bring my phone? I definitely could buy a burner phone to use while in China, but my preference would be not to because beyond just the added cost of a phone, the phone I have is my camera, navigation system, a translator and more.

Would using an Airalo/HolaFly e-sim and never logging onto WiFi in the country mitigate most of the security risk? If not, could I bring it and just leave it disconnected from the internet all together and stay safe? Any tips on this would be very helpful. I guess the big thing is I would just like to come home with money still in my bank account and my email not in the possession of a scammer or something. If they want to know what videos I watch on TikTok thats fine. I have no pending patents or anything of the sort.

Thank you! Super excited to experience everything China has to offer!
