I’d like to start printing my photos. But unsure how to approach

So, as title says. I wanted print some of my photos. I did it once already, but even though I thought they are bright enough the prints came out very dark (I used profesional photography printing service). Do you have any hints how to approach it? Should I focus on some specific parameters while preparing a photo to be printed?
