Dry membrane, damp panic: when to help a stalled hatch

Oh, the nail-biting suspense of a stalled hatch! This first-time incubator is living through every chicken-keeper's sweaty-palmed nightmare: a chick that pipped 21 hours ago but is now staring at them through what looks like a drying membrane. Is it time to play fowl play detective and intervene, or is this just the chick taking its sweet time? The pointy-end pip adds a whole new layer of egg-citing confusion. Then there's the early pipper from day 18 that's gone silent, and a third chick with its beak poking out the bottom, chirping away like it's mocking our anxiety. It's enough to make anyone feel like they're chickening out.
