Our take
Meet Poppy, the beloved 8-year-old Barred Rock who’s been a cherished member of the flock since the beginning. Today, she surprised us by flying down from her perch, only to wobble and settle into a loaf position—definitely not her usual self! Upon closer inspection, I noticed she has pasty butt and is missing some feathers above her vent. Despite these concerns, she’s still laying eggs and eating well, though her isolation comes with some stinky droppings. As a first-time chicken parent, I’m feeling a bit clucky about her condition and want to ensure she gets the care she needs. What could be causing this, and how can I help Poppy bounce back? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

| 8 year old Barred Rock. We found her still perched on the roosting bar this afternoon. My daughter went to check on her and she flew down then wobbled then loafed like this. I checked her legs and her feet they look fine. But I did discover she has pasty butt and is missing some feathers on her back side above her vent. She's still laying eggs, dining and eating. Isolated and does have a stinky smelling poop. What could this be and how do I treat it? I don't want to lose her she was my first chicken I got with my original flock. Her name is Poppy. - What is going on here and what do I do?Hey everyone, I noticed something was going on with my chicken’s butt today but I don’t know what it is. Any ideas? I gave her butt a soak in some warm water with epsom salts and tried to trim the feathers back to get a better look, but unfortunately my scissors were pretty dull, so hopefully you can see it from the pictures. I tried to massage it and it seems mostly fluid filled and squishy but there may be some hardness as well on the underside. Her vent looks clear, the area in question is a few inches below it. She is not lethargic and seems to be acting normally. Barb is a buff Orpington who is slightly over 4 years old and would love to be in tip top shape again soon. - Issue with my naked-butt chickenAs you well know if you life in the northern part of the US, this last winter was rough. We had a large stretch where it was -20 degrees plus. During that time, things were tough. I confined by birds to the inner coop for their safety, and brought them out hot water ever couple of hours. During this time, while everyone was inside and stressed, two of my chickens somehow got a poop balls on the fluffy feathers on their butts. I couldn't get them what to bathe them, so I tried working them with my fingers and breaking them off a bit. Eventually, two of my birds had feathers rip off their butts with poop balls. I used hen healer paste on them to cover their butts the rest of the winter, but this barred rock never grew those feathers back. Her butt is also somewhat chapped looking. My fear is that she got slight frostbite on her butt. Since then, she's been getting picked on. I put a saddle coat on her to cover her body, but they would pick at her bare butt. Today, I saw some blood near her vent, so I quickly removed her, cleaned the slight wound, sprayed her with silver spray, and rubbed the area with hen healer. Her poop is normal, she's active, eating and drinking. I checked her for parasites and found none. I saw no maggots or anything to make me think fly strike either. I think she has lost some weight, but I think it's because she's been broody and being bullied. I'm going to keep her in this kennel until she heals up a bit. Has anyone dealt with the bare butts? Why did only some of the feathers grow back since January? Will she be bare forever? How can I help her grow her feathers back so they stop picking on her? submitted by /u/Cheeseaisleinheaven [link] [comments]
- Sick chickenMy two year old Blondie has been acting sick today. She didn’t want to come off the roost this morning so after an hour we got her down and inspected her. No signs of injury, egg bound, vent looks good. Found her hiding in the bushes a few hours later so I brought her into quarantine and that’s when I noticed she sounded hoarse. What should I do next? submitted by /u/Sara_Lunchbox [link] [comments]
- Chick acting strangeI’ve had these 4 chicks since Easter. They’ve all been acting normally, but this one (I think is a Cream Legbar) is drinking fine, but she’s not eating, and she’s standing upright and peeping nonstop. She’s drinking by herself though. She had pasty butt for about 2 days before I cleaned it. I thought she would act normal after that, but she’s been like this for another 2 days, even after I cleaned her butt. She also doesn’t react to my hand, she huddles up against me and peeps. At first I thought it was malnutrition, so I gave her some olive oil with a pipette about 20 hours ago since it’s got a fat and calories. She still acting weird. I’m not sure what to do. submitted by /u/Lil_Torta1 [link] [comments]
